Succeeding Pete Gates, Retiring in 2022
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI – October 25, 2022 – Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union is pleased to announce current Chief Financial Officer, Steve Brewer, has been appointed as President and CEO of the Credit Union, beginning November 1, 2022.
Following a nationwide search, Steve was selected by MSGCU’s Board of Directors to lead the Credit Union and its 400 dedicated team members. He will succeed longtime President and CEO Pete Gates.
MSGCU has experienced significant growth and advancement during Pete’s 24-year tenure. The Credit Union has grown from assets of $275 million to $3.2 billion, expanded to 17 branch offices to conveniently serve members, and quadrupled in number of members, while maintaining high member satisfaction.
“We thank Pete for his years of service and contributions,” stated Board of Directors Chair, William Cayen. “This growth has resulted in a positive impact for our members including market-leading rates, industry-leading low fees, and giving back to our communities.
“Looking forward, it was a priority for our Board of Directors to select a successor who will continue MSGCU’s dedication to our mission of promoting financial success for our members. Steve embraces our strong culture and exceptional service to members. We look forward to seeing Steve continue MSGCU’s tradition of providing value to our members and supporting the communities we serve.”
Steve has served credit unions for over 30 years, and for the last 20 years as Chief Financial Officer of MSGCU. Steve has played an instrumental role in MSGCU’s growth and success. He has provided leadership and oversight for multiple key areas within the Credit Union.

Brewer, a Texas native, holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in both Finance and Real Estate from the University of Texas, a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, and is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas. Steve and his wife enjoy spending time with their five children.
